Country's major wireless operators are going head to head in price battle

With the announcement that NTT DoCoMo would carry Apple’s latest iPhones in Japan this year, a price war was ignited between the country’s three major wireless operators to offer the best iPhone deals.

If the headline sounds to good to be true, rest assured, it is. Japan is not offering “free” iPhone 5s units, but rather highly inflated data plans on a two year span for every customer that gets sucked into the deal.

All three operators are reportedly selling a “free,” 16GB iPhone 5s with two-year contracts, while KDDI is also offering a free version of the low-cost iPhone 5c with a new contract activation or transfer from competing carrier.

DoCoMo will take a customer’s existing SoftBank or KDDI handset in exchange for bonus points when they apply for an iPhone contract.
