“You have been selected to obtain a completely new Apple iPhone 5,” reads the ad

A scam claiming to offer a free iPhone 5 or an iPad 3 is making the rounds on Twitter. The authors try to trick unwary users into completing surveys that will likely end up with their personal information getting stolen.

“@filiptruta You have been selected to obtain a completely new Apple iPhone 5!! Claim your reward at appletryout dot com,” reads the scam, which I’ve been targeted by as well.

Within seconds, Twitter had suspended the account behind the tweet (Roxanneaxiwvq), but the scam at appletryout.com is still online.

By visiting the site, you’re told “You've been selected to participate in our monthly survey. This will only take 30 seconds of your time and your feedback will enhance user experience.”

They promise you a brand new iPhone 5 or an iPad 3 in exchange for completing the survey. The ad also states that the offer is available “today only,” but I have a feeling it’ll say the same thing tomorrow as well.

These scams usually ask for your phone number or email address to send you a code or whatever. You don’t know what they’ll do with it. Don’t be so naive as to think that completing a dumb survey can nab you a $600 / €600 gadget.
