Developer Jim VanDeventer has released iMAME, an app that lets you enjoy old arcade titles on your iOS device. It ships with a few old arcade games, like Circus, Crash, and Robot Bowl.

Described as “an application designed to recreate the hardware of arcade game systems in software on modern personal computers and other platforms,” iMAME’s purpose is to “preserve gaming history by preventing vintage games from being lost or forgotten.”

Don’t be surprised is Apple pulls it, as this kind of app just begs to pirate old game ROMs. For now, you can download and gain instant access to a total of nine games:  Circus; Crash; Fire One; Hard Hat; Robot Bowl; Side Track; Spectar; Star Fire; and Targ.

The developer notes that iMAME is not affiliated in any way with Nicola Salmoria or the MAME Team. The universal app works on all iDevices that support iOS 4.3.

ROMs can be added, using iExplorer or similar.

This is based on a very early version of MAME that supports very few roms from the early days of MAME... it does not support many hardware emulations, so it will only run a limited number of ROMs, many of which may have been released as public domain, as some game publishers have done.
