Microsoft has expanded the list of retailers which offer customers the chance to access a great deal when purchasing a new Windows 7 PC, by also getting a free Xbox 360.

The “Buy a PC, Get an Xbox” offer is now also available to users purchasing new Windows 7 PCs via Amazon.com and HP.com, in addition to the retailers that were already on boars with the software giant since last week.

The Redmond company introduced its back-to-school special deals early this year, getting a jumpstart on the competition.

While the “Buy a PC, Get an Xbox” offer will be live for the coming months, students shopping for a new Windows 7 PC and willing to spend at least $699 on the machine, will also automatically get an Xbox 360 4GB console free of charge.

“We’ve seen a lot of excitement and interest from students for the Windows PC and XBox offer over the last few days and we have more good news,” revealed Microsoft’s Kristina Libby.

“Both HP.com and Amazon.com have now come online to join with the other retailers who are participating in the “Buy a PC, Get an Xbox” offer including the Microsoft Store (online and in-person), Best Buy and Dell.com. The PCs that are available vary by retailer so make sure to consult various stores before making your purchase.”

So, students can take advantage of the “Buy a PC, Get an Xbox” offer from Amazon.com, HP.com, Best Buy and Dell.com. At the same time, they can either head over to the Microsoft Store online shop, or to an actual retail outlet if they’re close to one, and walk out with their new Windows 7 PC and the free Xbox 360.

“Get a free Xbox 360 4GB console with the purchase of select Windows 7 PCs $699 or more, at participating retailers in the US from 5/23-9/3 or while supplies last. Verification of student status required. See participating retailers for full details,” Libby added.

it does say in the ad on tv for college .

Comment #3 by: bobby on 30 May 2011, 21:35 UTC reply to this comment

first it should not only be offered to just students. also it should be offered to anyone buying a pc/laptop. Cause I just spent 500 on my laptop.

Comment #3.1 by: jo mama on 01 Jun 2011, 02:52 GMT

laptops over $699 or more

Comment #4 by: Izberg on 01 Jun 2011, 14:54 UTC reply to this comment

Seriously, how many actual college students have $700 to spend on a laptop? A purchase at that amount is more than likely made by a parent or someone else in an effort to help a student get the tools needed for college. If this were open to everyone, there wouldn't be a single Xbox on the shelf and Microsoft wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand.

Comment #4.1 by: Orack Bobama on 24 Jul 2011, 14:34 GMT

Perhaps by offering it just to students, there will be no flood of orders for free xboxes.

Giving it to everyone would drive the price people are willing to pay for an xbox to zero.
Any 20 year old, not in college, looking to buy would just buy off CL, from all the people selling their new xboxes.

There is a bonus in getting students to use windows. They will be more likely to use windows afterwards. You dont want a bunch of people entering the job market to be used to using Ubuntu. They will never buy a windows PC for the next 30 years.

Comment #5 by: JeffCPA on 01 Jun 2011, 18:10 UTC reply to this comment

The tv ad doesn't say through certain retailers or having to be a student!

Comment #5.1 by: why the hate on 15 Jun 2011, 16:24 GMT

it says "buy a windows 7 pc *FOR COLLEGE* & get a free xbox" outloud ...for college means students. & the fine print and "visit (website) for details" says the price etc
and not all students have parents and/or parents who would "foot the bill" some of us suck it up and waitress our way thru apt rent and personal stu loans. if you DO choose to give your kids the $. thats youre choice. stop complaining.

Comment #6 by: Debbie on 02 Jun 2011, 03:30 UTC reply to this comment

aargh! I bought a windows 7 pc two weeks before this free xbox deal was announced. guess i can't do anything about it :(

Comment #6.1 by: vogue on 04 Jun 2011, 04:35 GMT

I would contact who you bought it from cuz I think if it is within 30 days you can still get one. At least that's what the guy at Best Buy told me.

Comment #7 by: Lux4 on 03 Jun 2011, 19:48 UTC reply to this comment

What a load of crap.... Like college kids would even have the time to play the * game.

Comment #7.1 by: PPD on 02 Aug 2011, 20:00 GMT

Apparently, you never went to college...

Comment #8 by: Bearcubb18 on 07 Jun 2011, 15:50 UTC reply to this comment

This is always like this crap, it's to get into the kids pockets like they have the money it's Mom and Dad tha pays for it all, the add should be for anyone who is buying a PC and give all a Xbox not just go to this store or you have to be the ages of this .. it's always crap or some gimic to it. There is nothing ever for FREE there in your pocket for something. I bought 3 PCs all 700 or more bucks with Windows 7 on them and asked how about just one Xbox .. Told sorry your not a student and did not buy them from where we wanted you to. Then i said I did buy it at your posted stores and was still told sorry your not a Student, said I bought them bor my kids at collage, then tols sorry kid must buy them under there name. It's all crap.

Comment #9 by: unhappy father on 09 Jun 2011, 16:38 UTC reply to this comment

I think it's crap the tv add said nothing about spending 700 or more or at any specific store . My son spent his Graduation money To buy a Laptop for college, and found out after he had to spend 699 or more. not the 599 he spent of his own money at walmart.

I bought a new laptop last mounth from Dell, is Dell involved in this deal????

Comment #10.1 by: Banjoman on 05 Jul 2011, 01:41 GMT

Yes Dell is involved, however be advised they will try to get you to buy a laptop or PC for as much as they can get you to spend. I just spent an hour on the phone with them try to get a laptop for my son and trying to get the Xbox and the sales guy kept trying to get me to spend $600.00 more than I wanted to spend.

Comment #11 by: lms on 10 Jun 2011, 13:25 UTC reply to this comment

It's a shame that only students are ale to get this deal. It is the paents who are footing the bill.

Comment #11.1 by: Sporadik on 15 Jun 2011, 20:30 GMT

Troll

Comment #12 by: Spenky16 on 12 Jun 2011, 00:37 UTC reply to this comment

Stop being so judgmental. By the way it does say it has to be a $699 perchase, says in fine print. Learn to read and stop complaining

Comment #13 by: vet r. an on 14 Jun 2011, 03:33 UTC reply to this comment

tv add is too vague, should have known the fix was on, as c.r. stated what about us veterans? it's more than just students who have a vested interest in education; as always vets get slighted !!!!!!

Comment #13.1 by: What? seriously? on 15 Jul 2011, 11:43 GMT

What does any of that have to do with veterans being slighted?

Comment #14 by: Test on 24 Jun 2011, 20:03 UTC reply to this comment

Apple is doing very well on college campuses. I believe that is the reason that this deal is aimed towards college students.

Comment #15 by: Izzy C on 25 Jun 2011, 01:04 UTC reply to this comment

is it only college students? what about high school students?

Comment #16 by: The Truth on 01 Jul 2011, 17:54 UTC reply to this comment

I can't believe that there's people that complain about this promotion. If you're not a STUDENT or giving the $ to a STUDENT to spend $700+ on a PC/laptop then this is simply not for you. No reason to get upset or say it's crap. It's a promotion and that's exactly what promotions target, a specific group of individual. In this case STUDENTS, not veterans, disables, or just plain old miserable people.

Comment #16.3 by: Shirelle on 28 Jul 2011, 17:02 GMT

People are always going to find something to complain about...smh

Comment #17 by: Tim on 09 Jul 2011, 01:35 UTC reply to this comment

Why can't I just buy a pc for over $699 anywhere and register my edu address with Microsoft to get a coupon for the free xbox? Most of the configs the participating dealers are offering come loaded with things I would not buy.

Comment #17.1 by: Frd on 11 Jul 2011, 19:53 GMT

Like an XBox?

Comment #17.2 by: Jane on 15 Jul 2011, 11:37 GMT

I really wish they would do it that way, since I went to the website, found out the fine print, and talked to people at best buy, only to find out that even though the promotion lasts until september, it isn't still going at best buy now that I've found a way to pay for that over priced laptop. C'est la vie, I guess.

Comment #18 by: commonsense on 19 Jul 2011, 02:08 UTC reply to this comment

Just want everyone to know that you can buy a new computer and xbox and spend less. Do you know how cheap an x box is now? Black friday deals on computers make the promotion worthless. Wait and buy them individually and save money.

Comment #19 by: craftytms on 19 Jul 2011, 12:15 UTC reply to this comment

Who are participating retailers? I cant seem to find a list?

I purchased a Dell latitude laptop and spent $ 1,000 for this laptop. I was told by Dell I am not eligible for the free x box because I spent more money on a better business grade laptop for my daughter to take to college. Something is wrong with this !!!!!!

Comment #24 by: SAM I AM on 10 Aug 2011, 01:49 UTC reply to this comment

WHAT IS YOU PURCHASED AT COSTCO? ELIGIBLE?

Comment #25 by: Chriss on 11 Aug 2011, 18:24 UTC reply to this comment

Personally, I think this is a great offer, and plan to take advantage of it this month. I assume they subtract the cost of the xbox from the cost of the laptop, so $699.99 (laptop) - $199.99 (xbox) = $500.00 for a new laptop. What a deal!
As far as I can tell, however, you can go to www.xbox.com and get the same price on the free xbox ($199.99). With that in mind, you can buy any laptop and still get the same deal $?? (laptop) + $199.99 (xbox) = price for both...
Just food for thought...

Comment #26 by: bovee on 13 Aug 2011, 20:11 UTC reply to this comment

They should say something about "College Students" not just users. I think thats a bunch of bull because now I gotta find someone thats 16-18 or however old in college and get there .edu or i.d. lol

Comment #26.1 by: Alec on 18 Aug 2011, 06:46 GMT

If you don't know how old you are when you start college .. maybe you should be more worried about that instead

Comment #27 by: dwalden62 on 14 Aug 2011, 01:48 UTC reply to this comment

It bugs me, because I bought my new p.c. at Walmart, and you dont say that on the television commercial, so no X-Box!

I think this is a great offer i am also going back to school and just so happens i'm looking for a window 7 computer for the school i need so this is awesome and i can't believe this great deal exists well thank you for coming up with a great offer and keep them coming for the school kids as well as college grown ups can also use this who eve is going to school it would benefit them to jump om this offer god bless and thank you.

Comment #28.1 by: missin on 20 Aug 2011, 00:36 GMT

This is not a deal. Going through the 'free Xbox' link Dell wants $699 for their inspirion 15R computer, PLUS shipping. The exact same computer going directly to the Dell site is only $599 regular price with Free shipping.
So, Dell is tacking on $150+ for the exact computer if you want the xbox. The are charging you for the xbox.
Why would anyone spend $699 plus shipping on a laptop that normal price is $599 and free shipping.
It's false advertising its tricking people into BUYING an xbox.
Seems wrong on all levels

Comment #29 by: speedymag on 25 Aug 2011, 02:41 UTC reply to this comment

I just purchased $1200 sony vaio laptop at bestbuy. They were out of xbox but said I needed to contact microsoft to get xbox. Well microsoft says I needed to purchase from them. So we have new laptop that we really didn't need and no xbox

Comment #29.1 by: funkylic on 25 Aug 2011, 06:36 GMT

so you spent $1200 on a laptop you didn't need just to get the "free" xbox? great strategy!

Comment #29.2 by: speedymag on 02 Sep 2011, 02:45 GMT

No I spent $1200 on a laptop because you can always upgrade what you have when their is an added incentive with it. I thought it was pretty smart move especially when we had a tax holiday that weekend also.

Comment #30 by: RealMan on 28 Aug 2011, 21:35 UTC reply to this comment

Wow everyone complaining about not getting their free xbox, you people act like this is the first time for 'false advertisement' lmao. Stop whinning!
