Microsoft is one of the companies that fully support the Internet of Things world, so the Redmond-based software giant has rolled out today a custom version of Windows 8.1 that’s specifically designed to be used on Intel Galileo boards, which is the core of several devices built as part of this concept.

As PCWorld is reporting, the Galileo board is using a Quark X1000 processor, and comes with 10/100 Ethernet, PCI Express, JTAG and USB ports, plus compatibility with SD cards.

This new version of Windows 8.1 isn’t obviously supposed to be sold, but it’s instead a great opportunity for developers to create devices that run on Microsoft’s operating system and which could be part of a connected world.

“The preview Windows image is another opportunity for makers and developers to create, generate new ideas and provide feedback to help Microsoft continue making Windows even better on this class of device,” a Microsoft spokesperson is quoted as saying.

Microsoft itself has launched its very own Windows Developer program for IoT, trying to bring Windows to a new class of small devices and supporting those who want to create new devices as part of this program.

“This is the first in a series of Internet of Things (IoT) programs for the creation of connected devices. This program is tailor-made for both makers and Windows developers entering into the IoT space,” Microsoft explains.

Developers participating in the project are getting not only exclusive information about Microsoft’s plans and designs for new products, but also special hardware, including the aforementioned Intel Galileo boards.
