December 18th marks the worldwide premier of James Cameron’s latest movie Avatar. And there are more ways than one to join in the experience of the science fiction story than attending the premiere, or even have a piece of Avatar all for yourselves. Users that are running the latest Windows client from Microsoft can download and install a free theme featuring content from the movie. The Avatar theme is available for download from the Personalization Gallery for Windows 7, and is the official theme released by Fox Studios.

In all fairness, users already familiar with the Personalization Gallery might have already noticed the Avatar theme. Fact is that Microsoft and Fox Studios initially offered the content after the general availability deadline of Windows 7 on October 22nd, 2009. “James Cameron's Sci-Fi thriller "Avatar" (Fox Studios) has built out a futuristic desktop theme and screensaver to reach their fans, in anticipation of the movie's upcoming release in December,” revealed Microsoft’s John Nicol at that time.

The Windows 7 RTM Avatar theme is offered as a free download by the Redmond company as a part of an experiment ran by Microsoft Advertising. Essentially, Microsoft has partnered with a number of companies in order to allow them to leverage the Windows 7 desktop, as well as the personalization options of the operating system as branding advertising opportunities.

“Windows 7 is a great platform for any advertiser wishing to connect with their customers - it reaches beyond traditional advertising and builds a fresh relationship right from the consumer's desktop. Whether you're looking for a pure branding message that imbeds your persona directly within the consumer's desktop, or a full Windows Theme Experience, our partners have found this opportunity both powerful and unique. And Windows 7 makes it easy,” Nicol explained.
