Partition Magic was truly amazing back in the day. It represented the most flexible solution for tailoring your hard disk's volumes according to your needs. A quick alternative for it would be the Windows built-in Disk Management solution that in XP covers the basics of the partitioning process. In Vista it is slightly more flexible offering you the possibility to shrink or extend a volume easily and effortlessly.
However this is not exactly all a user needs from such a tool and features such as moving a partition to a different area of the hard disk or copying an entire volume to another location are also desirable.
EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition
comes to fill these gaps with no charge at all. This third-party solution brings you back in control of your hard disk by allowing partition resizing, moving it to another location on the disk, labeling it, formatting it or copying it.
You can give it multiple tasks to be executed serially and, in some cases, without restarting your computer. If the operation involves the system drive then a restart is imposed and all the changes will be applied before booting into the operating system.
The Home Edition of Partition Master presents a simple menu that can basically be dealt with by any user, either by choosing the options in the left hand panel or those in the toolbar, or simply finding the ones you need at a right click in the partition table. Everything is at hand and easily accessible.
More usability is available in the application in the panel listing all pending operations. There you can see all that has been programmed to be applied once you are ready to begin the process. Should you change your mind about one of the tasks, you are given the possibility to undo all of them. The application will not start the suite of operations without your okaying it.
The Partition Master from EASEUS makes for a great alternative to the built-in Windows resolution, providing more flexibility and better features. But if you encounter difficulties using it, you can find your answers either in the PDF formatted User Guide or in the help file.
So for those still sighing after
Partion Magic (which can now be found under the name of Norton PartitionMagic) there is a free way to slice and dice the hard disk without having to put too much effort into it. For home use Partition Master from EASUS does a wonderful job and there is nothing more the average user can wish for. In order to avoid any data loss we recommend backing up your important data before proceeding to resizing or moving a volume.
