The software can remotely locate, lock or erase a smartphone

Security software company Avira has just announced the immediate availability of its free application for Android devices. The application is capable of remotely locating, locking and erasing an Android phone anywhere across the globe.

Dubbed Avira Free Android Security, the application has been designed to make the phone “scream” in order to help the owner find it in case it’s lost.

According to the developer, the software security application is complemented by a Web-based console that can locate, lock-up and manage any compatible Android phones remotely.

As we already mentioned earlier, with the Remote Scream feature users can trigger the phone to make a loud sound for 20 seconds to help locating it. This is done from the Web console.

In case of theft, users can take advantage of the Remote Lock feature, which locks the phone with a 4-digit PIN while displaying a “call owner” phone number on the screen.

When this feature is triggered, it will lock the phone, but it will keep all data on the phone safe. Obviously, the device can be unlocked when it gets back into owner’s possession.

Location Tracking allows users to pinpoint the smartphone on Google Maps as the Avira application can send real-time location coordinates.

It is also worth mentioning that the application comes with Avira Android Web Console, allowing users to manage up to five phones remotely.

Avira Free Android Security is now available as a free download via Google Play and it should be available for all devices running Android 2.2 Froyo and 2.3 Gingerbread.

Since malware threats for Android are still relatively uncommon, we first focused on anti-theft and remote device management features in Avira Free Android Security. We felt these features are something our customers need and want today, and as the threat landscape evolves we will add anti-malware features as needed,” said Travis Witteveen, COO of Avira.
