The official description of the
URL Rewrite Module 2.0 is undeniably less user friendly than a link optimized by the tool. “URL Rewrite Module 2.0 provides a rule-based rewriting mechanism for changing requested URL’s before they get processed by web server and for modifying response content before it gets served to HTTP clients,” Microsoft says. Essentially, the module is capable of taking incomprehensive URLs and translating them into easy-to-remember, legible links that customers can easily remember.
But at the same time, the one detail to keep in mind is the fact that the URL Rewrite Module 2.0 for IIS 7 is also a search engine optimization tool. Not only does it deliver user-friendly, but also search engine-friendly links, a key factor SEO for webmasters that are optimizing their websites for Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.
“URL Rewriter makes Web addresses simple for customers to remember and search engines to find. URL Rewriter will help you implement simple and consistent Web addresses, generate customer and search engine friendly results, and leverage seamless integration with existing IIS features,”
Eric Rezabek, senior product manager IIS/Web, revealed.
Version 2.0 of URL Rewrite Module for Internet Information Services 7 has been wrapped up and released to web. As it was the case with previous versions of the module, URL Rewrite Module 2.0 for IIS 7 is available via the Microsoft Download Center completely for free. Of course, customers would have to be running their websites on an infrastructure containing Windows Server and IIS 7 in order to take advantage of the free SEO tool from Microsoft.
“There are now several new scenarios available to the Microsoft Web Platform with version 2.0 of URL Rewriter. My personal favorite is the ability to easily replace Web application URLs to produce user and search engine friendly results. URL Rewriter permits Web administrators to easily replace the URLs generated by a Web application in the response HTML with a more user friendly and search engine friendly equivalent. Links can be modified in the HTML markup generated by a Web application behind a reverse proxy. URL Rewriter makes things easier for outbound response content and headers rewriting with outbound rewrite rules that work with HTTP request and response headers and with IIS server variables,” Rezabek stated.
According to Microsoft, URL Rewrite Module 2.0 for IIS 7 allows webmasters to:
“- Implement complex URL rewriting logic by using custom rewrite providers written in .NET.
- Replace the URLs generated by a web application in the response HTML with a more user friendly and search engine friendly equivalent .
- Fix up the content of any HTTP response by using regular expression pattern matching.
- Modify HTTP request headers and IIS server variables.
- Modify HTTP response headers.”
