Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, the recently released third-person shooter from EA and PopCap, will get a free downloadable expansion in the form of the Garden Variety pack tomorrow, March 18, as part of a mandatory update.

Garden Warfare was rolled out as a bold experiment in PopCap's Plants vs. Zombies franchise, reimagining it as a third-person shooter with a distinct visual style and some really impressive multiplayer modes.

Now, after Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners have gotten used to the standard game, a bunch of free downloadable content is coming to the title as part of a special patch that rolls out tomorrow, March 18, according to Polygon.

The add-on, called Garden Variety, is set to include a new map called Chomp Town, as well as a new mode called Gnome Bomb, not to mention new powers for the different playable characters.

First up, there's the new Chomp Town level, which is a small urban map filled with many tight corridors but also some open areas, perfect for 8 vs. 8 online competitive matches.

The new map is still quite colorful, as you can see above, and includes multi-level restaurants, not to mention bright shops next to dark back alleys.

Chomp Town was designed by PopCap specifically for the new Gnome Bomb mode, which is also a part of the free update. The experience, which is similar to Battlefield's Obliteration, sees the two teams try to deliver a bomb, in this case one strapped to the back of a gnome, to the enemy base.

Cooperation and perfect timing is required in the Gnome Bomb mode, but those who prefer the regular Team Vanquish experience can also enjoy some intense matches in Chomp Town.

Besides the new level and mode, Garden Variety also includes three new powers for each of the classes in the game, augmenting their existing abilities with certain advantages but also disadvantages, in order to keep things fair.

These augmentations include a new rocket launcher that can fire three missiles but takes longer to reload, but also one that turns the Sunflower's beam into a rainbow one.

New costumes and accessories for all the different classes in the game are also a part of the Garden Variety DLC, but you'll have to acquire the different sticker packs from the in-game store in order to unlock them.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare gets the free Garden Variety DLC as part of an update tomorrow, March 18, via the Xbox Live online service.
