Customers building projects that leverage speech NUI (natural user interface) interaction can take advantage of a number of downloads from Microsoft.

With the Free Microsoft Speech Platform now up to version 11, the Redmond company is offering an updated software development kit, as well as additional resources, included documentation, to developers, free of charge.

There are three downloads available from the software giant: Microsoft Speech Platform - Software Development Kit (SDK) (Version 11), Microsoft Speech Platform - Runtime (Version 11) and Microsoft Speech Platform - Runtime Languages (Version 11).

The last two downloads offer managed (.NET) and native (COM) API for creating speech apps, as well as the speech recognition and Text-to-Speech engines for a comprehensive collection of languages.

At this point in time, the Microsoft Speech Platform 11 SDK and Runtime support no less than 26 languages, according to information from the company.

“The Microsoft Speech Platform SDK provides a comprehensive set of development tools for managing the Speech Platform Runtime in voice-enabled applications. Add the ability to recognize spoken words (speech recognition) and to generate synthesized speech (text-to-speech or TTS) to enhance users' interaction with your applications,” Microsoft reveals.

Developers need to visit the Microsoft Speech Platform on MSDN in order to access guidance on the technology.

Of course, the SDK itself is an important source of documentation, but also tools and code samples designed to simplify the creation of apps using Microsoft Speech Platform Runtime 11.

In addition, there’s an entire MSDN section dedicated to offering documentation for Microsoft Speech Platform SDK 11:

“The documentation for the Speech Platform SDK 11 includes a programming guide and reference sections to help you learn to use the speech application programming interfaces (APIs) to manage the Microsoft Speech Platform Runtime 11 and engines for speech recognition and TTS,” Microsoft said.

“The programming guide and reference sections contain sample code, and additional samples are available in the folders where you installed the Speech Platform SDK 11.”
