Nexon America has announced the release date of Mabinogi, a free massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG). The game will be available to play starting this summer, but those who can't wait that long can try their luck and subscribe to take part in the closed beta, scheduled to start on the 30th of
January.

Mabinogi brings a 3D world inspired from the Celtic and Welsh mythology - that's where the name comes from, the Mabinogion being a collection of prose stories from medieval Welsh manuscripts. The game provides a new experience with its variety of gameplay, an unique combat system and an age component, all of them meant to provide additional in-game depth. A nice implementation, at least for the music composers, is the possibility players have to share MIDI files. Also, for the romantic types, marriage is possible, too, so get ready to do some cooking or dungeon raiding whenever the urge strikes the two of you.

"Playing Mabinogi is about more than just fighting and normal MMO fare," said John H. Chi, president and CEO of Nexon America. "This is a chance for gamers to live a fantasy life in a place where communities build mutual beliefs of family, friendship and hard work."

As we said, if you are eager to try this game, you can enter the closed beta tests. And, besides the fact that it is free to play, Mabinogi requires more finesse and strategy during combat than just pushing a few buttons and attack everyone in sight. Also, the characters develop skills in three categories - Life, Combat and Magic - so experience can be gained from cooking or learning a spell, too.

Another nice system the game features is the aging one: first, players will receive daily bonuses as they play longer. Second, avatars get older on a weekly basis and get taller until they are 21. Also, the stuff you'll eat in the game will affect your character's appearance, just like in real life. So, if you are interested in the closed beta (for now), try the official website.

Sounds like another bland MMORPG. But this time, it's joining the Celtic bandwagon (despite the fact that the Mabinogion were written in the 1300s - after the Celts). As a Welsh person I feel quite annoyed at the fact that the game has little to do with the Mabinogion itself, just that the designers probably thought it would be a nice gimmick to have a foreign name.

Perhaps, someday, someone will make a genuine Mediaeval Wales, or a Gododdin MMORPG. Until that day, I'll feel hiraeth whenever I'm playing something like this.
