Green group Sea Shepherd has recently announced that free-diving champion Herbert Nitsch, otherwise known as “the deepest man on Earth,” is now a member of its Ocean Advocacy Advisory Board.

As a member of the Board, the current free-diving world champion is to help the organization safeguard marine wildlife and raise awareness of the need to implement conservation programs.

According to Sea Shepherd, Herbert Nitsch has been an “unofficial” ambassador for the organization for quite a while.

Thus, he has often mentioned the green group and its work to protect the planet's seas and oceans during the press conferences and meetings he has attended over the years.

“During Nitsch’s frequent travels around the world, he has observed the alarming state of our oceans and has become determined to raise awareness,” Sea Shepherd writes on its website.

“In his lectures worldwide and discussions with corporations and with the general public (including the free-diving community), he educates his audiences about Sea Shepherd’s work and emphasizes the importance of conservation and the plight of dwindling ocean life as a result of overfishing and other man-made environmental stressors,” it adds.

Herbert Nitsch was declared “the deepest man on Earth” in 2007, when he dove to 214 meters (702 feet). He broke this record himself in 2012, when he managed to reach the depth of 253 meters (830.8 feet).
