Toucan allows you to encrypt, back up and synchronize data

Another item on the list of free backup solutions is Toucan, which sports more
functionality besides the file backup and restore procedures. The application's expanded functionality can help you synchronize data between folders and even encrypt and store it on your computer.

Toucan's ease of use is enforced by the uncomplicated interface that shows everything the application can provide you with at a single glance, just by looking at the toolbar. You will not have any sort of menus to peruse in search of some function because everything there is to know about Toucan is present in the toolbar tabs.

Synchronization boasts several functions for you to use and a brief set of options. It permits you to start simple copying operations, update a destination with the new elements in the source, mirror two locations, equalise the contents of the two folders, move or clean them. As far the options are concerned Toucan's sync module allows you to enable the retaining of time-stamps and attributes or ignore read-only and daylight savings.

Backup procedure is as simple as synchronization. The application is able to perform more than one simple backup operation, offering you the possibility to run complete jobs, update the destination location with the latest elements in the source, run differential tasks or restore the backed-up items. The data stacked in the safe location can be stored either in ZIP or 7zip format and protected with a password.

Secure module offers you only the possibility to encrypt or decrypt data, with no additional options. However, in this case there is no destination location to pick because the software applies the task directly on the original data.

In all cases you have the possibility to create jobs tweaked with rules and variables you set. The jobs are saved from one session to another and retain the initial properties, allowing you to swift synchronization or backup of data between two locations.

The rules you can set refer to creating lists of files to be excluded from the task (file name, path or format) and folders (folder name or path) as well as creating a set of locations to be included at all times (file/folder name, path or file extension).

Variables on the other hand are specific places on your PC you point the application to. You can use the default pack specified in the help manual. Scripts can also be of help for the more experienced users and Toucan allows the execution of code pasted in the Script view of the interface.

The one feature one would expect in Toucan is scheduling all the tasks in order to automatize the procedures. Unfortunately this is not possible and all jobs have to be started manually. But although the application falls short of this feature, this does not make it any less useful.

Actually, Toucan supports command line operations, so you can simply call the jobs in what order you want. Not included in the application per se, but you can script the backups with very little effort.
