Well, if the media settled with calling Zidane a "disgrace" and blaming him for letting down the whole French nation, it seems that a few footballers agree with that. More, it is a Frenchman to argue that Zidane's gesture was horrible and that it was because of him that France lost the title. And, since Coach Raymond Domenech has put it more gently, Frank Lebouef was not about to ease up on his former teammate.
The former Chelsea defender blamed Zidane for letting
his team down when it most needed him and not thinking clearly when "heading" for Materazzi. The two players were on the same team in 1998, when France was winning their first World Cup trophy. Still, that didn't keep Leboeuf from launching a tremendous attack on the French captain.
"I cannot accept what Zidane did. I think Materazzi said something very bad for him to react like that. But it doesn't matter what he said - you cannot agree with what he did. I feel very ashamed because it is not the kind of thing this team does", said Leboeuf earlier today.
Still, the former "les bleus" defender agreed that a gesture like that should not be the thing to describe Zidane's career. More, Frank told the media that his colleague's fault shocked him, since Zidane is a very calm player outside the field.
"Zidane has been such a great footballer and a wonderful human being. I don't understand what happened because he is a very shy person, a quiet guy - not the kind of guy to show the image he did yesterday. He should have been focused on the real target - the World Cup. To go out like that, end his great career like that, is a pity", concluded Leboeuf.
