Francis Bacon's Lucian Freud work has become the most expensive painting ever sold at auction.

The painting created a buzz and snatched an eye-popping $142 million (€105 million) at a Christie's sale event.

The "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" features portraits of the painter included in a triptych. The work was completed in 1969 and it depicts the painter, the grandson of Sigmund Freud.

The painting was sold after "six minutes of fierce bidding in the room and on the phone" to Acquavella Galleries, Al Jazeera reported. As a result, I guess that it will soon be on display in Manhattan.

The previous record in this category was $120 million (€80 million), paid for Edvard Munch's "The Scream."

The record for the most expensive statue by a living artist ever auctioned off went to Jeff Koons for his "Balloon Dog."
