The clash against Spain was considered, by the French footballers, the chance to answer all critics in the media, supporters and even former world champions in France. Nobody was giving Domenech's team a chance in this game, especially since David Trezeguet was, again, a reserve for France. The supporters' cry of help left the "crazed coach" with no reaction. More, the Juventus striker did not play one minute in the match.
The game started off pretty bad for the French team. Like the "racist" Luis Aragones used to say - the coach made racist comments towards French player Thierry Henry
- "ball possession is everything". And that's exactly what the Spanish side did. They kept passing and passing and, finally, the goal could not have waited any longer. Thuram faulted Pernia in the penalty area, and David Villa managed to score his third goal in the World Cup. Still, it proved to be his last.
Although the Spanish side was in control, that didn't happen for a long time. The offside game worked out wonderfully for Aragones' team, except for the last 4 minutes of the first half. Vieira found Riberry with a wonderful pass down the middle and the Marseille striker dribbled Casillas to score for 1-1. And it was announcing to be a great game.
The second half brought nothing new to the game. Spain managed to keep the ball most of the time (61% - 39%) but France kept their cool and managed to play a great defensive game. It all stayed like this until the 83rd minute. When everybody was already thinking about injury time, Zidane crossed it to Vieira, who scored his second decisive goal in the World Cup, producing a winning header. Spain tried to get the equalizer, but they received another blow instead. This time, it was the one everybody mocked at who made it 3-1, Zinedine Zidane.
His goal from the 92nd minute put an end to the match. It was quite a spectacular match, especially since we had the most decent refereeing until now. Roberto Rosetti did a great job yesterday night, making the fans not enjoy HIS SHOW, but the one on the field. France gives Aragones his first defeat since he has taken over the Spanish team, and will meet Brazil in the quarterfinals. Let the World Cup begin!
