If you have been looking into high-speed cameras capable of shooting thousands of frames per second you’ve probably come out disappointed. These products are generally quite big and expensive, so they are usually inaccessible to most folks out there.

However, as it often happens, a budget alternative exists or is just around the corner. So if you don’t mind sacrificing in the resolution department in order to prevent drying out your wallet, you might want to look at what the fps1000 has to offer.

Fps1000 is tiny and fast

The fps1000 is a little, compact C-Mount camera that was designed by UK-based Graham Rowan and is a product for which he is currently gathering funds on Kickstarter.

The base model will allow users to shoot at 850fps at VGA resolution for just $483 / €382. But if you feel like you might be needing more than that, you’ll be able to opt for higher-res, more expensive models.

Operating the camera is easy enough and is achieved through an LCD touchscreen that allows users to see what the camera is shooting even when they are in high-speed recording mode.

The LCD display can also be used to play back the recording, either in real time, forward, or backward. The fps1000 is sold in monochrome or color versions for the same rate. All images snapped with the shooter with be saved in RAW format.

The Silver model is the starting kit

Interested parties can pick up the fps1000 Silver, Gold, or Platinum editions. The base model comes with the capacity of capturing between 850 and 16,500fps video at VGA resolution (640 x 480) and below. On top of that, it has 16GB of internal storage.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Gold model can do 200 to 16,500fps starting at 1280 x 1024 and has 32GB of internal storage. The most advanced one, the Platinum, shoots 70 to 18,500fps at 2560 x 2048 with 32GB onboard.

The camera is quite compact and easily fits anywhere. Moreover, it can last up to three hours on a 5V power supply. That’s pretty handy.

The inventor of the camera has already managed to gather the funds necessary to make the fps1000 become a real deal, so if you hurry up and make a pledge, there’s still a chance you might be among the first lucky ones to receive the product.

At the time of this writing, the fps1000 project still had 28 days to go, so go ahead and check out the Kickstarter page if you’re interested in this little speed demon.
