Sources in the upstream supply chain are reporting that Apple will move its Mac mini production lines back to the United States starting next year. The Mac maker has tasked Foxconn with the legwork.

Apple’s longtime partner Foxconn Electronics will begin building Mac mini computers in the United States starting next year, DigiTimes reports.

The company has 15 operating bases in the US and plans to hire more workers starting next year for its automated production lines for assembling the diminutive desktop computers.

Shipments are expected to reach 1.4 million units in 2012, a 40% increase over last year. In 2013, it is estimated that Apple will move roughly 1.8 million units.

Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed in a recent interview with the BBC that the company would start producing more products at home, reducing US’ dependency on cheap workforce in the Far East.
