This fall, Fox is bringing the story of Batman back into the spotlight, this time with a new television series that takes place before Bruce Wayne took to wearing the Batsuit, fighting crime and protecting the innocent. The origin series is called “Gotham” and it just got a first trailer.

“Gotham” shines the spotlight on Gotham City Police Department Detective James Gordon (Benjamin McKenzie), who will become Commissioner in Chris Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy. However, fans of the beloved superhero will still get to meet characters from the Batman universe, both villains and sidekicks.

Just in this trailer, for instance, we see Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Penguin, The Joker, and Bruce Wayne himself, as well as the event that will set the Batman story into motion: the killing of his parents after a night out at the opera.

I can’t but appreciate the somber tone of the new series, since it’s in keeping with the one used in Nolan’s critically acclaimed and fan-favorite films, but we will have to wait and see whether this is a case of sacrificing style over substance or not.

“Gotham” also stars David Mazouz, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith, Cory Michael Smith, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards, Camren Bicondova, Sean Pertwee, and Zabryna Guevara. The series premieres in the fall.
