28 people have been wounded on July 4 in California when fireworks blew up on the ground. Tjhe explosion, which we also covered, has been dubbed a "fireworks mishap" by local officials.

The cause of the explosion is still being investigated at this point. As of 11:30 p.m. yesterday, authorities reported that four people were in critical condition.

Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Mike Lindberry tells NBC Los Angeles that 20 people were taken to a local hospital, most of whom incurred minor injuries.

"We saw about three minutes of the show. There was some that went up in the area and everything just kind of scattered outwards and then everybody just started running.

"Everything exploded and parts came flying everywhere. People were running everywhere. So, it was pretty scary," a witness describes.

A video of the explosion, captured on the ground has emerged online. It reveals the number of fireworks that went off in Simi Valley yesterday.

Cmdr. John Parks, watch commander for the Simi Valley Police Department, mentioned that the fireworks went off at 9:20 p.m. at Rancho Santa Susana Community Center and Park.

"It seemed like the barrage of fireworks started exploding at the base of the park, right near the soccer field at ground level. Now obviously fireworks are designed to go up 200 feet (61 meters) in the air and explode. And we realized immediately that something was terribly, terribly wrong," J.T. Alpaugh says.

Roughly 8,000 and 10,000 people attended the event, but the exact number cannot be provided. The explosion was set off minutes into the Independence Day concert.

"Everybody started screaming and everything that was supposed to happen didn't happen. It was pretty frightening. And a block of wood … came shooting down into the side of my leg," another witness tells ABC News.
