Despite the launch of an obvious competitor as the Facebook Places, Foursquare seems to be set to become more popular as days and weeks go by, having recently reached the 6 million users milestone.

In a quite brief, yet highly informative post on their blog, Foursquare announced that they grew 3400% during 2010, thus breaking all expectancies. And since “[t]he numbers tell the story better than we can,” an infographic is also included.

According to this report, there were 381,576,305 check-ins during the past year on this service, whereas last week their 6,000,000th user signed up.

To make things more attractive, it appears that it only took this social network about a month and a half to round up a million users.

It should be noted that the most important event in terms of check-ins was Rally To Restore Sanity which took place in Washington, DC, in October 2010, and recorded 30,525 check-ins.

Another interesting aspect is that, since Foursquare was launched, at least a check-in has been made in every single country in the world, as well as one that was made from space, more exactly from the International Space Station. Also, it seems that the last country to check in was North Korea.

In addition, the presented infographic provides details about the most popular venues by category, also specifying the most popular brands on the network (this list puts MTV and Bravo at the top).

Those familiar with the service are aware that the main reason for the rise of Foursquare is that the company keeps improving the functionality, while also implementing additional features whenever they are required.

For instance, they have launched a dedicated photo uploading service that was very well received by users, so that in less than three weeks Foursquare already boasted one million shared photos.

Therefore, it looks like this location-based network will continue to satisfy the necessities of all users, constantly optimizing its services and adding new features without trying to compete with larger companies... yet.
