Reader Antonio sent the folks at Macenstein this clip of the UK girl group The Mentalists playing a cover of "Kids" by MGMT using iPhones and iPod Touches with music apps installed. Each device sports a different music app. Every girl controls at least one iPhone / iPod touch and sings vocally as well, while the devices themselves are connected to an amplifier.
Perhaps many iPhone / iPod touch users have downloaded music apps onto their devices only to realize that either they suck, or that the apps suck (and I'm not so sure about those apps). However, these four beautiful girls have proven that almost any music app for iPhone / iPod touch can make a great musical instrument. In fact, they might just become famous, should they improve their tapping skills.
"Kids" is the third single from MGMT's album "Oracular Spectacular." Released as a single on October 13, 2008, the song was written about Andrew Wood, the late frontman of late eighties hard rock band Mother Love Bone. According to several reports, the band is currently suing the President of France over his illegal usage of the song.
According to Macenstein, The Mentalists used Ocarina, Retro Synth, miniSynth, and DigiDrummer Lite to reproduce MGMT's "Kids." Nominated for the best musical instrument app in the 2008 Best App Ever Awards, miniSynth continues the tradition of the intuitiveness, simplicity and functionality of Yonac's music software. According to the official description, the app packs a punch seldom expected of a synth its size, twenty additional presets, and a new true-mono keyboard algorithm.
Downloaded over one million times in two months, DigiDrummer Lite was also the top 10 Free Music Program of the Year. DigiDrummer Lite makes it easy and fun to play drums on your iPhone and iPod Touch by offering high-quality, 16-bit drum samples, a recording and playback function, 8 drumpads, support for playing along your own music and more.
