His family's worst nightmare came true

A little while back we were reporting that Steve Thomas, co-founder of security software company Webroot, had gone missing. At the time the police were still hoping to find him, although they had no lead to go on. His dead body has been discovered near the base of Nuuanu Pali Lookout in Oahu, which is 985 feet high (just over 300m), not by the police but by three hikers.

Major Alan Bluemke, from the Honolulu PD, issued this statement: "The body appeared to have been there for a while. The injuries were consistent with a fall and we have no specific time of death. As to how the body ended up in that location we have no further details on that."

The most probable cause of death is suicide, especially since Thomas was suffering from bi-polar condition (aka manic-depression). Although his disease was a serious one, and probably the cause of his tragic demise, people will always remember him as the bright, innovative software developer that came up with the idea for Window Washer and Spy Sweeper.

Lee Kennedy for example used to work as CIO (Chief Information Officer) at Webroot and he says that Thomas was "ahead of his time in his insights on technology, the Internet and security" and he remembers him as being full of joy, a person who saw the glass half full.

Robert Berger, Director of Marketing and Communications with Webroot, expresses the company's deepest regrets: "We are deeply saddened to hear of Steve's death and are offering his family our most heartfelt sympathy for their loss. Even though Steve has not been involved with Webroot in over four years, he has many friends here and we will always be grateful for having been a part of his life while he was creating Webroot."
