Fotonauts, the creators of the world’s first collaborative photographic encyclopedia (Fotopedia), have slashed the price on their Memory of Colors iOS app to “free”, but only for a limited time. Hurry and grab it now!

Apple is the one promoting the offer, announcing via Twitter, that “fans can get Fotopedia’s Memory of Colors for free, but only for a limited time.” As usual, the Mac maker links to the app’s iTunes page for immediate download.

A priceless collection of pictures and video covering human evolution and cultures, Memory of Colors is touted as a masterpiece by Jaime Ocampo Rangel, including “a rainbow of 1,300 photos of 40 unique cultures, created over 12 years, in 18 countries (from Algeria to Yemen) and across 5 continents.”

“It is a pause in time and space to preserve the beauty of these disappearing cultures, before it is too late,” Fotopedia empathically explains. “Look into these eyes and see … the reflection of your own humanity. Here are the other ‘ourselves.”

Fotonauts also created Fotopedia Heritage, one of the top 50 apps of all times as recognized in Apple’s Hall of Fame.

Localized in English only, Memory of Colors requires an Internet connection to stream its content.

It can be used not only by photography enthusiasts, and lovers of the earth, but also children, educators “or anyone who values and appreciates the diversity and stunning beauty of human cultures.”

For those looking to just steal a photo or two from the app to use as wallpapers, the Fotonauts have implemented a Wallpaper function that allows users to grab any of the 1,300 masterpieces in portrait mode and use them as backgrounds on the handsets.

Other key features include Instant Slideshows - “transform your iPad or iPhone into an endless, beautiful photo frame”; simple navigation with Smart Tags, Suggestions, Search and Interactive Maps; rich descriptions for all works and a Shuffle function, allowing users to shake their device to discover new images at random.

Updated yesterday to version 1.1, the app adds a Favorites list builder to create your own, easy-to-build personalized favorites list. It also adds UI French translations, with more languages to follow, says Fotonauts.
