Fotonauts Inc. have announced that their collaborative photo encyclopedia, Fotopedia Heritage, has been inducted into Apple's App Hall of Fame alongside such titles as Angry Birds, The Elements, and Brushes. The App Store Hall of Fame features 50 of the most popular applications for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

“In a world of plenty, the question about what to download just got easier for apps fans today,” say the makers of Fotopedia Heritage.

“More than two years after Apple launched the iTunes App Store, the Hall of Fame surfaces to spotlight 50 apps in a new area in the App Store,” the company is proud to announce.

Fotopedia Heritage, a free download from the iTunes App Store, was created in cooperation with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to become a visually stunning app that provides a “virtual passport” to hundreds of World Heritage sites.

These sites constitute the world’s collective cultural and natural human legacy, according to Fotonauts Inc.

The developers have confirmed that an upgraded version of the app, made available just last week, now offers more than 25,000 photos, a list that grows every day, thanks to the contributions of the Fotopedia community.

Some 30,000 photographers and curators reportedly make all this possible.

“Photo enthusiasts, travel addicts, teachers, parents, visual learners, anyone really, can appreciate the beauty and brains behind Fotopedia Heritage,” Fotonauts Inc. adds. “The app helps users celebrate the beauty of the world with spectacular photos that depict over 3,000 places of interest.”

It requires iOS 3.1.3 or later, which means it’s compatible with every device model, including first generation iPhones and iPod touches.
