A man has been fatally shot at Fort Knox headquarters in the afternoon, and reports classify the victim as a civilian employed by the Army.

WDRB writes that the U.S. Army Human Resources Command staffer has died in the clinic at Ireland Army Community Hospital.

Authorities informed that the victim and the assailant had an altercation before the attack, stressing that the Fort Knox shooting was not random.

“Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command are investigating a personal incident and not a random act of violence,” describes Chris Grey of the independent Army investigative agency.

Someone alerted police on the fact that shots were fired at 5:40 p.m., prompting a lockdown as officers responded in a matter of minutes.

“As a standard security measure, Fort Knox's gates were locked down at about 5:50 p.m. to all inbound and outbound traffic.

“About an hour later the Chaffee (Main) Gate fully reopened, but due to an enhanced security posture, people attempting to enter and exit from the Chaffee (Main) Gate will likely experience delays.

“The Brandenburg Station Road Gate remains closed through the evening, as it is normally, and only outbound lanes at Wilson Road Gate are open at this time,” Fort Knox officials explain in a statement issued after 10 p.m. today.

Police are looking into a person of interest in the case, a dark-haired, brown-eyed African-American man of medium build.

The mystery man has been described by Fort Knox spokesman Kyle Hodges as being 5-foot, 9-inch (175 cm) tall. He may have made his escape in a black Yamaha motorcycle.

In the same press release, Hodges explains that the victim has been shot in a parking lot outside the Human Resources Command facility.

The victim's name and the identity of the potential suspect are yet to be disclosed at this point.
