The chairman of UK’s Cyber Security Protection Alliance (ICSPA) David Blunkett warns that terrorists and rogue states could seriously cripple the country by launching large-scale cyberattacks against its infrastructures.

The former Home Secretary highlights the dangers posed by the underground network known as the “darknet” where criminals freely trade all sorts of weapons and valuable information, Yorkshire post reports.

Blunkett says that the attacks launched against organizations such as the Serious Organized Crime Agency (SOCA) are far less significant than attacks that would target the United Kingdom’s truly sensitive systems such as the installations of a city.

“One of these attacks could send us back to the 1950s. What I’ve been pressing for and I think the Government do understand is you need to have both the resilience to stop it and a very sophisticated recovery plan,” he explained.

The official is almost certain that we’ll witness an attack sometime in the future. However, he states that initial strikes may not necessarily target the UK, but a country that is less prepared.
