Sir Paul McCartney, who is a former Beatles member and one of the most lauded musicians of the last 30 years, has announced that he is creating original music that will be featured in an upcoming unnamed video game.

Speaking to a German newspaper called Die Zeit Paul McCartney said, “I was asked whether I could imagine doing something like this, and I found it exciting.”

He added, “Besides, it is a fascinating market. These days a new computer game sells much better than a CD. And you reach an entirely different target group. This way many young people will probably listen to my music for the first time while playing a video game.”

Sir Paul McCartney did not mention the developer or the publisher he is working with, but he added that he was at the moment working hard to deliver the new music, although it is not clear whether the musician is creating just one track or a full soundtrack.

It seems that the video game world is attractive to Sir Paul McCartney because it will allow his music to reach a bigger and younger audience, which might then also discover the music of The Beatles.

In 2009 the video game world was surprised to hear that the Beatles estate and the representatives of the four original members had agreed to license the music of the band for The Beatles: Rock Band, a music based simulation game created by Harmonix and by MTV Games.

The development team mixed the Beatles’ songs with media taken from their golden days and simulated performances and both reviewers and players praised the resulting experience.

Unfortunately, when The Beatles: Rock Band was launched, the genre was already in decline and the game never managed to have the same impact as earlier releases.

Harmonix has promised that it will release more titles in the Rock Band franchise but no clear projects have so far been announced.
