Forget about IE8 Beta 1 - Get Ready for Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2!

What's next for IE8? Well, much more than just IE8 Beta 2

In case you live under a rock, Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 is now available as a public download. Via Internet Explorer 8, designed as the successor of IE7, released all the way back in October 2006 for Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista, Microsoft is finally offering the first taste of the next iteration of Internet Explorer. But the Redmond company has failed at this point in time to indicate a release date for the final IE8. But what it did manage to do is point to the next step in the browser's evolution: Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2.

In all fairness, IE8 Beta 1 is a release aimed at web developers. While it
does bring to the table features such as WebSlices and Activities, end users will not see a browser evolved very far beyond IE7. But with the next development milestones of the browser, IE8 will change radically with a focus on end users. Hints from Dean Hachamovitch indicated that the next Beta build of IE8 is planned for the summer of this year.

IE8 Beta 1 - "There's a lot more. (...) While anyone can download it, this is a developer beta. We released it at MIX for a good reason: great web experiences start with web developers, and we want to engage developers first. We believe that to build a better browser for the people who use the web, we need to build a better browser for the people who make the web. Non-developers are welcome to try it, but they'll be more interested in Beta 2," Hachamovitch stated.

Because IE8 beta 1 is focused almost entirely on developers, the key aspects of the release are without a doubt enhanced interoperability and advanced Web standards support. Both of which the Redmond company failed to deliver with IE6 and IE7. And even as early as the first Beta of IE8, Microsoft is already committed to a certain direction of development.

"Our goal is to deliver complete, full CSS 2.1 support in the final IE8 product. IE8 Beta 1 for developers delivers better interoperability with other major browsers, addressing major pain points (e.g. floats and margins) from previous IE releases. We're not finished - there's much more to come in Beta 2," Hachamovitch added. "We've contributed over 700 test cases to the W3C CSS working group because we think a comprehensive certification test suite for CSS is important for true interoperability and we support the W3C's effort to deliver such a suite."

Hachamovitch did not reveal what Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 will bring to the table. But of course that while Beta 1 was focused on developers, end users are next in line to get their fix. IE8 Beta 1, with Activities and WebSlices, does provide a preview of a more feature-rich IE8 Beta 2, but there's no telling what those features will be.

"We've delivered better scripting performance because we heard from developers that they needed it given how heavily the latest rich web experiences rely on script. We've started delivering support for HTML5 because we understand that developers want to start delivering richer web experiences, with great interoperability, as soon as possible," Hachamovitch said.

I'm running IE8 here because i'm a web developer.
So far I've only had troubles with it, and there's nothing actually interesting that was added.

The google maps site doesn't work at all (shows up as a total mess). I'm suspecting that Microsoft crippels maps.google.com on purpose. Besides that it crashes oftenly, and after a crash, IE tries to restore all tabs that were opened by starting a new IE instance for each tab; each taking about 40-50MB of memory. That brought be pc to its knees several times already.

All in all, beta1 is crap. Don't bother with beta1 unless you're interested in seeing how it doesn't work.

regards,
Wouter

Yeh IE8 has loads of bugs and problems. when you search on google the logo is messed up and in the google search results if it finds a youtube video related with your search it has a messed up google logo over that too! and this is the main problem for me - It wont let you download sum stuff on the internet and it wont let you download anything atall from CNET - Download.com and its annoying!!!!! next time they bring out another ie it should be tested Thouroughly!

hmmmm how should i put this.
ie 8
As a highly technical person i have tortured ie8 and found it is easy to hack into, it crashes........ and a whole load of other problems you wouldnt understand......
my advice is to stop using microsofts ie and adapt to using mozilla firefox 1.5 as i found this the most reliable and secure.

IE 8 Beta is breaking sites all over the place. I applaud MS for trying to make the browser more standards-compliant (and passing the ACID Test, for whatever that's worth) but wish they would just make everyone's lives easier and be more like Mozilla. IE5 sucked, IE6 has it's own problems, IE7 is ok but now IE is changing the game and not necessarily in a good way. I'm just hoping that IE8 release version will not break sites like this beta...

I Think IE8 is still under heavy development, the web engine is far to be functional, and if google maps doesn't work maps.live.com crashes it..
(the javascript engine is messed up).
Yes the best choice is to avoid IE and use everything else.
Anyway I have to admit that the developers tools are useful. It could be nice if they succeed to make it work properly.

IE 8 Beta one isn't that bad, a really poor version of FX2 if you want a comparison. For those having breaking problems, remember you have to put it in IE7 emulation mode. Any ways I use FX3 for my main browser, and every once and awhile twiddle around in I E 8 Beta one.

All in all I haven't had a lot of problems with it, just waiting to see them improve the interface, and make it easier to put stuff on the favorites bar, that is like FX bookmarks tool bar for those who want to know what it is. Also improved stability and speed, this thing even with low resource consumption, runs slow.

I haven't had a bad experience with IE 8 beta as far as crashes or problems with web sites. What I don't like about IE 8 is it's UI. IE 6 had a much better UI you could customize IE 6 move tool bars and Buttons around. Why Microsoft still has not got this is a mystery to me. In the beta's of 7 people complained about the UI. in the beta's of Vista people complained about the locking down of tool bars and again Microsoft still ignores the complaints.I don't understand how having less is better, how i don't understand why the UI need's to be locked down, how is that an improvement....

IE8 Beta 1 sucked! It slowed the internet way down and slowed the computer too. It was always recovering tabs when you clicked on the home button. IE7 is better. It works great and unlike IE4-IE5, it don't pop up syntax error and unlike IE6, it does not pop up the "Send Error Report" dialog box all the time. I do hope though(with all my experience with computers)that IE8 Beta 2 will be better. And Mozilla sucks. It Either don't like to load (no matter who i download it from), or it loads slow, sometimes restarts my computer! I'll just keep waiting on IE8 Beta 2.

How do I delete IE8 and go back to IE7? I am having too many problems.

When I try and download IE7 it comes back with a nessage indicating that my current version(IE8) is newer and refuses to proceed further. Advice appreciated.
