AccessData has announced the first forensics solution to enable forensic examiners to perform physical imaging of the iPad - Mobile Phone Examiner Plus (MPE +) 4.2, a standalone solution that integrates seamlessly with the industry-standard computer forensics technology, Forensic Toolkit (FTK).

In addition to providing physical support for the iPad, MPE+ also gets along well with Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch devices giving forensics examiners exactly what they need to get work done as fast as possible, anywhere.

According to Lee Reiber, director of Mobile Forensics at AccessData Group, “MPE+ gives forensics examiners a huge advantage."

This is because the solution supports over 2500 mobile phones, and also "delivers unsurpassed support for smart devices, such as iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android products, which are now a primary concern among computer forensics professionals,” Reiber said.

Available as a software-only solution for laboratories, or on a preconfigured Field Tablet for onsite phone acquisitions, MPE+ offers examiners a way to seamlessly correlate phone evidence with computer evidence within FTK.

“Examiners using MPE+ will appreciate the solution’s easy-to-use interface and the ability to extract and immediately view data,” Reiber commented. “So now, first responders, with little FTK or forensic training can conduct extractions without compromising the integrity of the evidence.”

According to AccessData, version 4.3 of their Mobile Phone Examiner Plus 4.2 include larger buttons, easier to understand icons, and a customizable layout of interface tabs / panes.

Support for physical image acquisition of iPhone (both CDMA and GSM), iPad and iPod Touch is also touted in the changelog, as is the newly-added support for logical viewing and image acquisition to include device file systems.

Finally, logical device acquisition can now retrieve the serial number of the device for all supported Apple devices, AccessData said.
