Microsoft has released an update to Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG), designed to kick up a notch the remote access solution for corporations. Forefront Unified Access Gateway Update 1 has been released on the Microsoft Download Center and is currently available free of charge for UAG customers. The refresh will update the functionality of UAG, but is also set up to introduce a number of improvements.

For instance, Forefront UAG Update 1 offers support for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, but also for MSOFBA. Essentially, following the integration of Update 1, UAG customers will be able to leverage rich clients with direct access to applications published through Forefront UAG, via the Office Forms Based Authentication protocol.

Additionally, the update offers “Remote Desktop access from Windows Vista and Windows XP: Client endpoints running Windows Vista and Windows XP can now access RemoteApps and Remote Desktops published through Forefront UAG. Support for site cookies: Forefront UAG now supports the use of site cookies for non-alternate access mapping applications, in addition to domain cookies. Support for large CustomUpdate files: Forefront UAG now supports CustomUpdate files up to 1.5 GB in size,” Microsoft reveals.

Forefront UAG 2010 was released to manufacturing in December 2010. However, it took a while for Microsoft to start offering the successor of Forefront IAG (Intelligent Application Gateway), to the general public. It was only in January 2010 that Microsoft started offering customers UAG 2010 for purchase.

Additionally, Forefront UAG Update 1 delivers “changes in Group Policy Object (GPO) provisioning for DirectAccess clients: Update 1 fixes an issue that caused the export script that creates GPO objects to fail, and an issue that caused the GPO to be applied to all authenticated users in the domain (including computer accounts), instead of to DirectAccess clients only,” the company adds.
