According to Microsoft

In some scenarios, Microsoft too is nothing more than a software vendor racing to make its products compatible with the latest Windows client and server operating systems. It is the case of the Forefront line-up of security solutions, some of which have already been tailored to Windows Server 2008 R2, and some that still have to be tweaked in order to play nice with the platform. Krishnan Venkatasubramanian, program manager for Forefront Server Protection, noted that there were Forefront solutions already featuring support for Windows Server 2008 R2, while plans are in place for the remaining items of the same product-lineup to also embrace the latest version of Windows Server.

“The following products are designed to be compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2: Microsoft Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server (FPE) - Microsoft Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server will be available in Q4 2009. Microsoft Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint (FPSP) - Microsoft Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint will be available in Q1 2010. Forefront Server Security for SharePoint - Microsoft Forefront Server Security for Share Point version 10 with Service Pack 3 and later versions are supported,” Venkatasubramanian said.

While Microsoft released Windows 7 for purchase on October 22nd, 2009, Windows Server 2008 R2 has been available for customers since September. However, the Redmond company still has products that are not compatible with the successor of Windows Server 2008. “At this time Microsoft Antigen 9.0 for Exchange / SMTP Gateways and Forefront Security for Exchange Server 10 are not compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2,” Venkatasubramanian added.

Microsoft has a webpage dedicated entirely to enumerating all Microsoft Server Applications supported on Windows Server 2008 R2. The resource in question reveals that “Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway - Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010 and later versions will be supported beginning Q4 2009. Microsoft Forefront United Access Gateway - Microsoft Forefront United Access Gateway Beta 2 and later versions are supported.”
