Alan Mulally, currently CEO of Ford and one of those who have been involved in talks for the Microsoft CEO position, was reportedly interested in joining the Redmond-based software giant in the summer of 2012.

Even though he now ruled out the possibility to join Microsoft because he wants to stay at Ford until late 2014, Mulally said in the past that Microsoft and Google could be his only two destinations in case he decides to leave the American automakers.

This is what the Wall Street Journal is reporting today, explaining that Mulally talked about his plans with an acquaintance, but never affirmed the same thing publicly.

Mulally was a close friend of Steve Ballmer and the two have even discussed on Microsoft’s transformation plan to devices and services, as the outgoing CEO needed advice on how to revamp the software giant he was leading.

With Mulally out of the race for the Microsoft CEO seat, all eyes are now on Satya Nadella, who’s currently in charge of the cloud businesses, as he’s considered to be the front-runner for the vacant position.
