Ford’s CEO Alan Mulally remains a top candidate for the Microsoft CEO seat, even though he insisted that he wanted to stay with the American carmaker until 2014.

According to a report published by Bloomberg, Ford’s directors have met the past week to discuss Mulally’s future, in an attempt to set things straight and decide whether they should start looking for a new CEO and thus approve a major upper management change.

Executive Chairman Bill Ford, Chief Operating Officer Mark Fields and Alan Mulally himself denied a possible switch to Microsoft, with all three explaining that no leadership change is planned until next year.

Microsoft is said to consider Mulally a top candidate for the CEO seat, along with Stephen Elop, the former Nokia boss who joined Redmond after the acquisition of the mobile unit belonging to the Finnish manufacturer.
