For Linux Lovers: The Penguin Mouse

- Shaped like a penguin and USB connectible

By: Alexandru Pancescu, Hardware Editor

A computer mouse is no longer a simple object as nowadays it may come in a variety of shapes and sizes, colors and tones, bigger and smaller and sporting exotic or more common features. Among the shapes that a computer mouse can take these days is the shape of a little happy penguin,
looking especially for those Linux lovers out there.

While this mouse is certainly cute and does not look half bad, I have to speak up my mind and say that it may be less than ergonomic or practical for that matter to the above average computer user. On the hardware side, leaving the design behind, the optical USB Penguin Mouse is using the high speed USB interface version 2.0 in order to connect to a host computer system and at least in this department is just like any other mouse that came to market in the last few years. It also features an USB to PS2 adapter so penguin and Linux fans can enjoy their mouse even when using older computers that have few or none USB ports.

The mouse's motion sensor is optical of course and the embedded sensors provide a high enough resolution for casual gaming or home and office intended applications. Running at a standard resolution of 800 dots per inch, or DPI for short, the motion sensor should be able to track user's movement on most surfaces without the need of a mouse pad. Coming again to the design specifications, the USB Penguin Mouse is featuring the now standard scroll wheel and two buttons while being available in three main color themes: black, pink and blue. At 66 grams it is certainly a light mouse and its dimensions are in the comfort range for most users (9.2 x 8.0 x 3.0cm), while having a data transferring cable of 140cm which allows the mouse to connect with an under desk positioned computer system. According to the site usbgeek the USB Penguin Mouse is available at online stores and it features an affordable price tag of $15. The animal themed computer mouse offers support for a wide variety of operating systems like Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, ME, 2000, 98SE or Mac OS and of course Linux.
