The developers at Gearbox Software are pretty busy at the moment, working on Aliens: Colonial Marines, a new Brother in Arms game and Borderlands 2, but their leader still found time to speak about how the team approaches game development like an entertainment religion.

Speaking to an audience at the Nordic Game Conference during his keynote speech, Randy Pitchford, who is the boss of the Gearbox studio, has stated, “When I first founded the studio, I had one real goal in mind: to entertain the world.

“I figured out a long time ago that the most effective form of entertainment is interactive entertainment. It's the only one where the person being entertained is also a participant. This is a really exciting but difficult industry to be in because technology is always changing, always strange and there are always things to learn and discover.”

The veteran developer added, “Entertainment is like a religion at our studio. Our purpose defines us. Often times, we'll talk about entertainment and creativity. We're not just talking about the entertainment of customers but also about our own entertainment. There's an artistic side that is the root of creativity and a component of entertainment.”

Pitchford has said that Gearbox is also a business, detailing a profit sharing scheme allowing those who put more time into development of a game to get more revenue when it launches, and that another core objective is linked to internal harmony and happiness.

The first game that Gearbox will deliver is Borderlands 2, the first-person shooter which is slated for a September 18 launch in the United States and September 21 in Europe, taking players back to the planet of Pandora.

The company will also launch Aliens: Colonial Marines during 2013 and has long-term plans for Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, for which it just refilled a trademark.
