Modular smartphones is not really an innovative idea since the first type of devices with interchangeable components date from back 2009 when Israeli company Modu launched its first product.

Even Google is now readying its own modular smartphones, which are not being developed under the Project Ara name. The first devices are expected to be released on the market later this year though an exact launch date has yet to be confirmed.

Until then though, an Austrian company has just kicked off a crowd-funding campaign for a new modular smartphone called Fonkraft.

The Fonkraft can be pre-ordered via Indiegogo for as low as $99. The smartphone is available in different configurations since the main components can be switched for better ones.

Starting with the 5-inch slide display that can be replaced, just about any other main part of the Fonkraft can be switched with another one.

Three predefined configurations, but also a customizable one

For $99, customers will get a basic Fonkraft model that sports a 5-inch HD (720p) display, 1.3GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory, 8-megapixel camera, 2-megapixel secondary camera in the front, and 4,100 mAh battery.

Those who can afford to pay $199 will be able to grab the Fonkraft Resolution, which packs a 5-inch full HD (1080p) display, 2.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 64GB internal memory, 20-megapixel main camera, 2-megapixel front-facing camera and 2,800 mAh battery.

Another option would be the Fonkraft HiFi, which comes with the following components: 5-inch full HD (1080p) display, 2.5GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB RAM, 64GB storage, 8-megapixel camera, 2-megapixel front-facing camera and 2,100 mAh battery.

Last but not least, the Fonkraft Elements is priced at $299 and includes all the components, so users can assemble any of the specs configuration they like.

The Austrian company behind the modular smartphones confirmed they are working on additional modules like secondary SIM and additional antenna, but also 16-megapixel rear-camera.

It's also worth mentioning that the Fonkraft will ship with Android operating system right out of the box, sometime in September.
