Focal, the camera application previously included in CyanogenMod ROMs, is now available for download as a standalone software for all Android 4.1 and newer devices.

The application has been removed from CyanogenMod due to its developer’s discontent with the new licensing model adopted by the team behind the popular Android software.

However, those who would like to continue using the app can now download it through the Google Play Store, completely free. The open source code for it is also available for download on Github.

“Focal is a fully featured camera app looking to provide the most features on the most phones possible, including device-specific features on some devices,” the app’s description reads.

The software comes with both photo and video modes, as well as with features such as burst, timer, scene, shutter speed on Sony devices, and more.

Furthermore, it sports panorama capabilities, PicSphere, and a review drawer, which shows the latest pictures, accessible through sliding from the top of the screen when in portrait.

“In photo mode, you also have access to a few tools, such as automatic picture enhancement (auto-awesome), or a rule of thirds overlay,” the app’s developer explains.

“On some devices, settings such as Color adjustment, HDR and a manual light measure point are also available. Double tapping the screen will put your in quick shot mode, where tapping the screen anywhere will take a picture.”

Furthermore, Focal comes with support for high-framerate video recording, should people like to make use of it.

The application was designed to work with most smartphones, but it was targeted mainly at tablet PCs running under Android, it seems.

“It is a BETA, which means you might encounter bugs and crashes. I'm mostly working on newer devices (Galaxy S3 and +), so older devices might encounter more issues than recent ones,” the app’s developer also explains.

You should head over to the Google Play store to download Focal for Android.
