Back in the beginning of February, controversial boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. pulled one of his signature publicity stunts when he announced on his Twitter page that he would be letting fans decide who was going to be his next opponent.

The boxer opened up a poll and offered fans a choice between the British boxer Amir Khan or the Argentinian pugilist Marcos Maidana. “I'm going to let the fans vote. Tell me who I should fight next. Khan or Maidana?,” he said and directed fans to pledge their votes on his personal website.

Today, the scrappy Mayweather has announced the winner of the contest, and his next opponent. “I will be fighting Marcos Maidana May 3rd on Pay-per-view Showtime/CBS,” the boxer tweeted and added a photo of himself in a hoodie, defiantly looking at the camera as if poised for the battle.

Regarded as the undisputed top pound-for-pound fighter in boxing, Mayweather will be defending his WBC welterweight title against the Argentinian Maidana, who is the WBA titleholder. The event is going to take place on May 3 and will be televised by Showtime Pay-per-View.

Despite the fact that many had money riding on Amir Khan as Mayweather's next opponent, Maidana landed the deal, and it's probably got a lot to do with the fact that he managed an impressive win against the very popular Adrien Broner back in December. This made him look more dangerous in the eyes of Mayweather's camp and promised fans a more spectacular fight.

The venue where the fight is going to take place has yet to be announced but, by all accounts, it's going to be the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a place where Mayweather has been facing opponents in the ring for his last eight fights.

Among the venues that were battling for the opportunity to feature the fight was The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, making a strong pitch to bring the boxers to New York. However, this location is going to be in tough competition with Nevada, which doesn't levy income or business tax on boxers, as opposed to New York.

In other Floyd Mayweather-related news, the boxer has been recently linked with the famous singer Lil' Kim and her unexpected pregnancy. It is a known fact that the two are close friends, and Kim often flies out to Vegas to watch Floyd fight or just to hang out.

The two were spotted clubbing on different occasions, sparking rumors that Mayweather could be the baby's father, despite the fact that an obscure rapper known as Mr. Papers came forward and claimed the child as his own.

Lil' Kim has yet to confirm the identity of her unborn baby's father, but the silence only manages to increase speculations and rumors.
