The Tour de France winner, American Floyd Landis, has got to be the most criticized sportsman in the world right now. Not only that he failed a drug test, but he did it while winning the Tour de France. And that would make him the first Grand Boucle winner to be stripped of his "yellow jersey" because of a doping scandal. And it all happened after he managed one of the most impressive performances in Le Tour's history.
Still, Floyd Landis did not lose confidence in the fact that the B Sample would clear him of all doping allegations.
The Phonak rider finally made a statement concerning what happened in the last 24 hours, stating that he is innocent. And it seems to be part of a Phonak curse, since Tyler Hamilton also failed a drug test while leading the team 2 years ago.
"I don't know what the explanation for it is, whether it was a mistake or whether it's an occurrence from some other circumstances that go on in the race or something I did, but it was not from an exogenous outside source of testosterone. Unfortunately, I don't think this is ever going to go away no matter what happens next", stated the American.
Even if the B Sample confirms the first result, Landis is determined to fight it all the way. Still, the Phonak rider admits that his team would certainly sack him and that lots of people will not believe in his innocence. Landis might end his cycling career at the age of 30, since a 2 or 3-year ban would make his return in the Tour almost impossible.
"Most of the public has an idea about cycling because of the way things have gone on in the past. I know a lot of people are going to think I'm guilty before I have a chance to defend myself. I think there's a possibility I can clear my name. That's what I want to do, that's my objective now. But regardless of whether that happens or not I don't know if this will ever really go away", said Floyd.
The days to come will give us the final result of the drug analysis. If the B Sample confirms the initial one, Landis will lose his Tour de France yellow jersey, the place in his Phonak team and, probably, the chance to compete again inside international competition.
