We have now discovered the name of the cyclist who failed the drug test in Le Tour de France. And it was the worst news possible. Floyd Landis, the very man who won the Tour de France after an extraordinary recovery, failed the drug test and was found positive in using banned substances. It is yet unknown what those substances were, but the investigators found a pretty high level of testosterone in his body after that incredible 17th Stage of le Grande Boucle.
Although it appeared to be just a rumor
- his team withdraw him from the Dutch race - Phonak made the official statement later yesterday. "The Phonak Cycling Team was notified yesterday by the UCI of an unusual level of testosterone / epitestosterone ratio in the test made on Floyd Landis after Stage 17 of the Tour de France", said a statement from his team.
The 30-year old American was suspended by Phonak from all cycling competition, until the B sample analysis confirms or not that he used banned substances. The cyclist himself stated that he will ask for a new test, since he denied using anything that would make him cheat the competition. Still, if the B sample proved otherwise, Landis will be sacked.
It all happened in the 17th stage of Le Tour. Just one day earlier, the Phonak rider lost the yellow jersey after a poor and struggling performance. He lost almost 10 minutes on the Alpe d'Huez climb and allowed Oscar Perreiro to regain the "yellow jersey". In the 17th stage, he managed a solitary race and came just 30 seconds behind the leader after the stage, winning it 5 minutes and 38 seconds in front of Carlos Sastre.
Floyd Landis is the first cyclist who won the Tour de France that failed a drug test in the history of the sport. If he will be proved that he did, indeed, used banned substances - and the B sample should confirm it - Landis could be stripped of his "yellow jersey". Oscar Perreiro may be the new winner of le Grand Boucle. But we'll just going to have to wait and see.
