After becoming a hero in his natal country - he was the first man to win the Tour after the "Lance Armstrong dynasty" - Floyd Landis has all the chances in the world to turn into a renegade. His sin, using banned substances during the Tour de France, is not only going to destroy his cycling career, but will also bring disappointment within the community he has been raised in.
More than a model citizen, Floyd Landis is a Mennonite Christian. He will certainly not be forgiven in his natal town for the wrongdoing he has committed.
And come critics have already condemned his A Sample results. The head of the US Olympic Committee himself, Peter Ueberroth, was very disappointed with the latest news concerning the Phonak rider.
"We must respect the due process rights that are afforded to every athlete who competes in a sport that adheres to the World Anti-Doping Code. With that said, if the B sample confirms the result of the A sample, and if Floyd Landis is ultimately found to be guilty of a doping offence, it would be an incredible disappointment", stated Ueberroth. More, the American official made it very clear that the fight against doping still needs a series of improvements for the future.
"The bottom line is this: while good progress has been made in the fight against doping in sport, we believe that much more needs to be done. The severity of this problem is such that nothing short of a collective effort involving every segment of sport in our country -- from youth, to amateur, to professional and Olympic -- will be required in order to win this battle. Doping is cheating. It compromises the integrity of sport and the health and well-being of athletes; it undermines the Olympic ideals; and it sends the wrong message to society", continued the head of the US Olympic Committee.
Since Landis is yet to make a statement concerning the latest doping scandal that he's facing, Ueberroth admitted that the American will very likely miss the US Olympic team for the future: "As an organization, we have taken a stand and made clear that if you participate in doping, you are not welcome on the United States Olympic Team".
