Many of us started blaming Floyd Landis for his failed drug test after the 17th stage of Le Tour de France. Despite the fact that he continuously stated his innocence, there was something about his reasons that didn't quite convince us. Drinking whisky and beer a night before the last Alps stage and soon after he lost the "yellow jersey" was more like a joke for the cycling fans than a believable motive.
And the Tour de France winner (still) realized that. Soon after
the B Sample result was made public - and the high level of testosterone was identified - Landis came out to the media and tried to explain the reasons why those funny explanations were given out to the newspapers.
"I've come out in the press and tried to explain these test results, but I think that was a mistake. I was forced into this situation because of leaks from the UCI. All of these reasons that have come up, some from me, some from other people, we need to forget about them and let the experts figure out what's going on. The whisky idea was not mine and the dehydration was a theory from the lawyers I hired in Spain to represent me at the opening of the B sample. But I did not authorize them to say something like that so I'm disappointed with that", explained the former Phonak rider.
The American also explained the journalists why he didn't call a press conference immediately after finding out the B Sample results. "I'd just finished a three-week race and this came as a complete shock to me. I was completely unprepared. But I have a new goal, to prove myself innocent and figure out exactly what's going on behind the scenes", admitted Landis.
The Tour de France winner was already sacked by his Phonak team and is likely to lose his Tour "yellow jersey". His fate is now in the hand of USADA (the US Anti Doping Agency), who will give the world their verdict in a few days.
