The title can be classed as being a racing and simulation game that is played from either a first-person or third-person perspective, with the game mechanics emphasizing stunts and crashes.

FaltOut is a video game that allows the player to drive some of the most powerful muscle games around all of them controlled by a figurine called the Ragdoll.

The game has a variety of modes with the focus being on going as quickly as possible around dirt tracks and on battling other drivers inside destruction derby-like arenas.

There's also a special event called Ragdoll Olympics, where the player needs to crash his vehicle in such a way as to throw the Ragdoll inside as far, as fast or as accurately as possible.

FlatOut can switch between a Normal handling mode, which is very arcade and best suited for gamepads, and Professional mode, for those who own a steering wheel and like simulation grade level experiences.

The game includes a lot of physics which drives very realistic impacts with a variety of objects on the track giving widely different results depending on how the player crashes into them.

The multiplayer modes include hot seat, split screen, Local Access Network, online play.
