Certain encrypted flash drives manufactured by Sandisk have been found to possess a security flaw that can leave devices vulnerable to data breaches. The flaw concerns the front end software, which requires a password input. It was discovered that, after the password was first introduced and the drive allowed access to the data, the software could be hacked. The result would be the unconditional acceptance of any subsequent passwords as correct, which would leave the storage units vulnerable. Kanguru claims that its Defender Elite does not possess this vulnerability.

Sandisk has manufactured flash drives for companies like Verbatim, Kingston, and others. Unlike their products, however, the Kanguru Defender Elite is shielded from hacking attempts by two technologies working in unison. These are the 256-bit hardware encryption and on-chip password matching. Not only that, but the security level is augmented through remote management and USB device control. As such, the flash drive, according to the company, meets government, healthcare and financial industry standards.

“A design flaw of this type seriously compromises the security of any data residing on these devices,” Nate Cote, vice president of product management at Kanguru, said. “Our Kanguru Defender Elite uses hardware based encryption chips to determine if a login password is legitimate or not, safeguarding users from potential attacks of this nature.”

To this, Kanguru CEO Dan Brown added that, “This development validates Kanguru’s decision to use our own resources in the design of our secure flash drives. Many companies are utilizing the Sandisk software and will be affected by this issue.”

The Kanguru Defender Elite has a simple setup procedure and does not require administrator privileges. The maximum data capacity is of 128GB. Full information may be found here.
