USB 3.0 is the new groove, and it's not a moment too soon

It might not look like it, given all the news about USB 3.0 flash drives, but drives with only USB 2.0 support still make up 90% of this particular market segment.

Fortunately, many companies are stopping manufacture of USB 2.0-only drives, shifting completely to USB 3.0.

Backwards compatibility will still be ensured of course, but the number of drives with just the older-generation interface will drop quickly from now on.

According to Digitimes, the market share of SuperSpeed USB 3.0 drives will rise to 40% by the end of the year, and then further in 2014.

It helps that there isn't much of a price difference between USB 3.0 and 2.0 anymore, and even then the performance boost justifies it. 4.8 Gbps (rounded to 5 Gbps) is 10 times better than 4.8 Mbps after all.
