The Adobe MAX in Japan on January 28, 2009 gave the company an ample opportunity to applaud record installation milestones for its technologies. In this context, Adobe indicated that Adobe Flash Player 10 has now been installed on over 55% of the world's computers, this after just a couple of months since the solution was initially introduced. At the same time, Adobe AIR, after its first year on the market, has jumped over the 100 million installations mark.

“Adobe is the leader in enabling people to express themselves and connect with others globally, through the distribution of our world class client software,” revealed Michele Turner, vice president, product marketing for the Platform Business Unit at Adobe. “The incredible traction we’re seeing with Adobe AIR and Adobe Flash Player 10 in such a short period of time is a clear indication that individuals and organizations across the globe rely on the Adobe Flash Platform for breakthrough interactive content, applications and video on the Web.”

Despite efforts from Microsoft, which entered the online video and rich interactive application (RIA) space with Silverlight, two years ago, Adobe Flash remains the dominant platform for serving interactive content online. Furthermore, Flash is also the number one platform for developers, a situation that also fuels the adoption of AIR, not only by end users but also by developers. According to Adobe, in the last year alone, the AIR software development kit (SDK) jumped over the 1 million downloads mark.

“Flash Player 10 is breaking all previous records for rate of adoption for Flash Player, and we expect greater than 80% penetration by the second quarter of 2009. The Milward Brown survey has details on the methodology used to determine the Flash Player penetration,” stated Adrian Ludwig, Adobe's manager of secure software engineering. “Adobe AIR is not included in the Milward Brown data yet, so I thought it might be helpful to explain our methodology. The number we announced is the count of successful initial installations of Adobe AIR – this provides a minimum for the total install base of the AIR runtime.”
