14 DAY TRIAL // If you tweet something related to the popular Flappy Bird game these days on Twitter, chances are that an unknown “individual” will send you a message that appears to point to a Pinterest article.
Security researcher Trojan7Sec says the scammers are trying to lure users to a bogus job deals website. The site in question is designed to display a message that reads “Free Exclusive Job Offers for [location].” The location varies depending on the victim’s IP address.
“You have the opportunity to earn some daily money! All you have to do is review and complete surveys about products. You will receive your payment every 24 hours. We are currently accepting only 11 more members!” reads another message on the scammy site.
The purpose of this website is to get users to complete various surveys (for which they can allegedly win a bunch of prizes), trick them into handing over personal information, and install all sorts of shady software on their computers.
Victims are also asked to enter their phone numbers. This automatically signs them up for a premium mobile service that can seriously inflate their bill.
The bogus job offers website has been around for quite some time. The Twitter spam campaign is designed so that the spammy accounts interact with users who tweet about trending topics.
Since Flappy Birds is trending these days on Twitter, the scammers target all those who tweet about the game.
In case someone sends you a message on Twitter that contains nothing but a link, act with caution. If you come across a website such as the one in the second screenshot, close it.
If you’ve already handed over information, you might have unwittingly signed up for a premium mobile service. Check out the website in question since it likely contains instructions on how to unsubscribe.
If you’ve installed any software, scan your computer with an anti-malware program.
