Washington, Lincoln and Truman are doing great, their caretakers say

Earlier this month, three flamingo chicks hatched at the Lion Country Safari in Florida. The chicks emerged from their eggs on July 1, 2 and 4.

Since they were born either close to or just in time for Independence Day, keepers decided to name them after US presidents. Thus, the three fuzzy creatures are now called Washington, Lincoln and Truman.

Sources say that, when born, flamingo chicks are white. Apparently, it takes them about three years to change their plumage and turn pink.

This is because flamingos get their body color from nutrients contained in shrimp, plankton and other crustaceans.

Birds belonging to this species are most often seen walking about water sources. However, wildlife researchers say that they are gifted swimmers and fliers.

They're just too lazy to display their skills as often as we'd like them to.
